The Best Treatment to Kill Fleas on your Pet

There are so many treatments available out there. I will give you my honest advice on the best ones to use.

A friend of mine saw a flea on her daughter recently. This so horrified her that she rushed out to her nearest pet shop and spent £80 on flea drops for her cat, a 'bomb' that one releases in the home and the fumes will 'kill' the fleas in the carpet and flea powder to sprinkle all over the cat and her home (I imagine). I think she has been my inspiration for this site as she carefully followed all the instructions and left her home for a few hours so that the flea 'bomb' could have its effect and she treated her cat with the pet shop flea drops, only to see yet more fleas crawling all over her pet only a few days later!

My advice is simple, do not waste money and time on pet shop or supermarket flea products. It is tempting to pop in your pet's flea treatment of Sherleys or Bob Martin products when you are doing your weekly shopping, but rather use products that work. They are just not strong enough as pet shops and supermarkets are not licensed to sell products with certain ingredients that DO work.

Another word of caution is do not use tea tree oil to kill fleas on your cat. It is poisonous to cats.

When I started out as a vet in the UK in 1994, all that was available in most surgeries was Nuvan Top spray in an orange aerosol can. The sight and sound of the spray sent so many cats fleeing and I hated dispensing them for this reason.

Many people still buy flea collars which are not very effective and means that you cannot cuddle your pet or have them in bed with you (which is where most UK pets seem to end up!). The only flea collar that I recommend and mention below is called Scalibor. It is specific for pets travelling abroad where there are other dangers, not just fleas around.

Since fairly recently in the UK, stronger veterinary flea products such as Frontline have become available to buy from pharmacies. Clients are also able to ask for prescriptions from their vets to purchase other forms of flea treatment from their pharmacy, so you have the right to ask for this. If you have a flea problem, either buy your flea treatment from your vet, your pharmacy or get a prescription from your vet or your problem will not be sorted out.
