Program Plus Tablets in dogs to control the flea environment

Program tablets

The active ingredients of Program Plus tablets in dogs are milbemycin oxime and lufenuron. These tablets are only available from your vet or with a prescription form your vet.

Indications

wProgram Plus tablets are given to your dog monthly and they are indicated for the prevention of fleas as well as the treatment of hookworms, roundworms and whipworms in your dog.

wRemember that the active ingredients in Program Plus do not kill live fleas, they stop the development of flea eggs and larvae , so Program is an environmental control. Some owners would rather give these monthly tablets than have to spray their homes with household sprays such as Acclaim Household flea spray.

wRemember that as Program only stops the flea development and does not kill them; pre-existing generations of fleas (ie pupae) present in the environment can continue to develop and emerge for several weeks after the start of treatment. You will still need to use other flea drops on your pet such as Frontline or Capstar tablets to kill the live fleas seen on your pet on kill those due to hatch in the environment if you have a flea problem.

wProgram tablets are expensive (in my opinion!).

Advice on the correct administration

wTo ensure that Program plus tablets are adequately absorbed, they must be given with food, or place the tablet directly in your dog's mouth after he has eaten.

wTreatment can begin at any time of the year. If you are travelling to an area where there may be heartworm carried by mosquitoes (such as Spain); treat your dog one month before going and then continue whilst you are there on a monthly basis.

wGive the tablets monthly. They come in a pack of 6 and you are given stickers to remind you when next to dose your pet.

Treatment of Puppies

wTo prevent flea infestations and worm infections, Program Plus should start from 2 weeks of age or from a minimum weight of 1kg.

Contraindications

None

Undesirable effects

As Program kills the worms, there can be undesirable effects in your pet such as pale gums, vomiting, laboured breathing and excessive salivation caused by an allergic reaction to the protein released by proteins from the dying worms. This is not common and Program has no other side-effects.
